Charlotte Dumas

Galerie Paul Andriesse Amsterdam. October 22nd – December 10th

Opening saturday October 22nd  17:00 - 19:00

Immediately following the attacks of 9/11, nearly 100 trained search dogs and their handlers –enlisted from 18 US states– were deployed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), to join the rescue efforts at the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington. Alongside firemenand other teams sorting through the debris, the dogs worked tirelessly around the clock to locate survivors in the rubble –images of which deeply intrigued Charlotte Dumas as the events unfolded in the news media. One decade later, discovering that only 15 of these dogs were still alive, Dumas succeeded in tracking each of them down, visiting and photographing the dogs at their homes throughout the US, where they all still live with their handlers. Composed at close range in natural light, Dumas’ powerful portraits offer an intimate view into the everyday lives of these highly specialized working animals, now sharing the vulnerability of old age as they once pursued a common heroic goal.

´Retrieved´ at Julie Saul Gallery NYC. September 8th – October 15th

The Julie Saul Gallery is pleased to present a selection of photographs from Charlotte Dumas’ new project and book Retrieved. Earlier this year Dumas set out to photograph the surviving rescue dogs that, in the aftermath of 9/11, worked at the sites at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Out of the group of almost 100 dogs originally deployed by FEMA, she located 15 surviving rescue dogs and arranged to photograph them. The now retired dogs are all still living with their owners, and she visited them in their homes in twelve different states. At the time of the attacks, all of the dogs were at least 2 years old, so today they are in their old age.
