The new book Entendue is published by Fw Books.
This book brings together photographs and drawings of elephants — images I’ve taken with my father’s half-frame camera, alongside some of his early charcoal sketches, his very last elephant drawings, and ink forms made by both of us.
Born of memory and shared experience, these works became my anchor in seeking a deeper understanding of humans and elephants — what we receive from and owe to one another, within our families and across the distance of our separate lives.
When I was a child, my father and I sketched elephants at the Blijdorp Zoo in Rotterdam. He drew effortlessly and taught me to observe animals with care. Near the end of his life, when Alzheimer’s had taken hold of him, we visited the elephants one last time. His drawings from that day were abstract — more felt than seen. Later, I returned to Blijdorp with his camera, photographing the elephants that barely seem to fit within its small 8×24 mm frame. A month-old elephant was bumbling about that day, playing with his older cousin and he is vividly present in this book
Spanning decades, these encounters have quietly shaped this book, which became a meditation on memory, kinship, and the threads that weave through generations of humans and animals alike.
An edition of the book is available with an analogue silver gelatin print of the cover image for €400. The print, signed and numbered, measures 18 × 24 cm (image size 10 × 13 cm) and is limited to 25 copies
